Native Doctor Akwa Sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by an Anambra State High Court in Awka. He pleaded guilty to multiple counts related to unlawful spiritual practices and public misconduct. Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwaokuko Tiwara Aki, was convicted as the court delivered a landmark judgment. This reinforces the rule of law and social accountability. In addition to imprisonment, the court ordered the complete demolition of Nwangwu’s shrine in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area. The process of the demolition will be officially recorded on video. The convict is mandated to publicly renounce okite practices across all social media platforms. He will also sign a formal undertaking to desist permanently from it. Upon completion of his sentence, he is expected to serve as a youth ambassador, educating young people against illegal paths to wealth.

Justice Obiora disclosed that the law prescribed an option of ₦20 million fine each on three additional counts, which could have substituted for six-year prison terms. However, the judge exercised judicial discretion to waive the fines after observing signs of remorse from the convict.
The court further ruled that the sentences would run concurrently, meaning they would be served simultaneously rather than consecutively. Taking into account that Nwangwu had already spent 13 months in detention at the Agunechemba facility in Awka, the court held that he would serve only the remaining 11 months at the Nigerian Correctional Service Centre in Awka.

In a sweeping directive aimed at social reformation, the court ordered the complete demolition of Nwangwu’s controversial shrine located in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, with the process to be officially recorded on video for accountability.

Additionally, the court requires that the convict must use all his social media platforms to publicly announce that he has ceased practising okite, a ritual practice linked to illicit wealth claims.
Justice Obiora also ordered Nwangwu to make a formal promise renouncing such practices permanently. Upon completion of his sentence, he is expected to serve as a youth ambassador, helping to correct harmful narratives and discourage young people from pursuing illegal pathways to wealth.

Correctional Facility and Time Served
Although defence counsel appealed for the convict to serve his term at the Agunechemba detention facility, the court rejected the request, ruling that the sentence must be served at the Awka Correctional Centre, citing the lack of proper correctional infrastructure at the Agunechemba facility.
