Corruption in Nigeria is deeply entrenched in every fabric of society, from the corridors of power to the streets where ordinary citizens struggle to survive. It is a crisis that has crippled institutions, weakened the economy, and eroded public trust in governance. The late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa once asked, “If you’re a judge and you are corrupt, then where do we go from here?” This soul-searching question still echoes in the present reality of Nigeria, where justice is now transactional, and the rule of law bends in favor of the highest bidder.
When corruption infiltrates the judiciary, it marks the death of justice. If the executive is corrupt, people seek redress in court. If the legislature is corrupt, citizens rely on the courts to uphold fairness. But what happens when the judiciary itself is compromised? It means that justice is no longer blind but rather for sale. The common man loses hope, and anarchy takes root.
Government policies in Nigeria often reflect insensitivity to the plight of the people. Infrastructure is neglected, public services are failing, and yet taxes, levies, and utility bills continue to rise. Communities fund their own electricity projects, only for the government to step in, demand payment, and burden them with unaffordable bills. Innovators who create solutions for Nigeria’s industrial development are ignored, while entertainers are lavished with government contracts and financial rewards.
The hypocrisy of governance is evident. The government warns that "smoking is dangerous to health," yet tobacco production and sales flourish. They preach unity, yet operate dual legal systems - one law for the privileged and another for the oppressed. Ethnic and religious divisions are actively exploited to keep the masses divided while the ruling class remains unchallenged.
What Is the Way Forward?
- Judicial Independence: The judiciary must be freed from political control and financial inducements. Judges should be accountable, transparent, and insulated from corruption.
- Government Accountability: Public office holders must be held to strict ethical standards, with real consequences for corruption and mismanagement.
- Economic Justice: Policies must prioritize wealth redistribution, creating opportunities for small businesses, inventors, and the unemployed.
- Civic Engagement: Nigerians must reject apathy and demand accountability through protests, voting, and legal activism.
- Reorientation of Values: Society must move away from celebrating corruption and mediocrity while penalizing honesty and hard work.
Nigeria is at a crossroads. As Proverbs 29:2 states, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, the people groan.” It is time to fight for a new Nigeria - one where justice is not for sale, where leaders are accountable, and where the dreams of its citizens can be realized. If we do nothing, we remain enslaved to the very system that oppresses us. So, where do we go from here?
