In a recent three-day seminar organized by the Rosana Empowerment Foundation (REF), titled "Exploring Nigeria's Post-Polio Landscape: A Nuanced Perspective on Polio-Free Declarations," critical issues surrounding the nation's polio-free certification were thoroughly examined. Despite the celebratory atmosphere surrounding this achievement, the seminar brought to light nuanced challenges that demand attention to ensure sustained success.

The keynote address by the Executive Director of REF, underscored the importance of scrutinizing surveillance gaps. While Nigeria proudly holds a polio-free status, addressing these gaps collaboratively is crucial for comprehensive disease monitoring. The emphasis was on fortifying the commitment to swift outbreak responses to maintain the hard-earned polio-free status. Persistent vaccine hesitancy emerged as a significant challenge to Nigeria's polio-free journey.

The Executive Director highlighted the need to dispel misconceptions and build trust through tailored awareness campaigns involving community leaders and health professionals. Overcoming this challenge is pivotal for ensuring widespread acceptance and participation in immunization efforts. Survivors of post-polio syndrome were recognized as requiring sustained support. The Executive Director stressed the importance of acknowledging specific needs and implementing targeted interventions to enhance the quality of life for these survivors.

The impact of geopolitical conflicts on vaccination efforts and the increased risk of polio resurgence was addressed. Participants emphasized the need to address these challenges strategically to sustain Nigeria's progress in polio eradication. The Executive Director highlighted the indispensable role of global collaboration in maintaining Nigeria's polio-free status. Entities such as WHO, UNICEF, and the Gates Foundation were acknowledged for their pivotal role in sustaining comprehensive surveillance and prevention strategies. In conclusion, Nigeria's victory over polio is commendable, but the nation faces multifaceted challenges. Vigilance, continuous surveillance, and global collaboration were highlighted as imperative for lasting success. The seminar served as a platform for open dialogue, offering insights and recommendations for a proactive approach to sustaining Nigeria's polio-free status.
