REF Joins the Global Movement to Protect Boys from Abuse!

Breaking the Silence: Protecting Boys from Sexual Violence

For decades, conversations around child protection have largely focused on the vulnerabilities of girls, leaving boys' struggles with abuse in the shadows. However, sexual violence against boys is a real, pressing issue that has been overlooked for far too long. The Rosana Empowerment Foundation (REF) is taking a stand by joining the global movement to end the silence and protect boys from abuse. In alignment with Blue Umbrella Day (BUD) - an international awareness initiative observed every April 16th - REF is advocating for stronger policies, better support systems, and global recognition of the fight against sexual violence targeting boys.

The Hidden Crisis: Why Boys Need Protection Too

Sexual abuse against boys is a silent epidemic. In Nigeria and many parts of the world, boys who experience sexual violence often face deep stigma, disbelief, and inadequate legal protection. According to studies:

  • 1 in 10 boys experience sexual violence before turning 18.
  • The majority of cases go unreported due to fear, shame, and cultural biases.
  • Boys who do report abuse are often dismissed or blamed, further silencing victims.

This lack of acknowledgment leaves many boys to suffer in silence, often battling mental health issues, trauma, and societal exclusion without access to proper support.

Why REF Supports Blue Umbrella Day

Since its inception in 2021, Blue Umbrella Day has been instrumental in mobilizing global efforts to protect boys from sexual violence. It has:

  • Reached thousands of children, NGOs, and policymakers worldwide.
  • Sparked dialogues around the prevention of sexual abuse against boys.
  • Influenced policy changes in multiple countries.

But there is still much work to be done! In 2025, we are pushing for the United Nations to officially recognize April 16th as Blue Umbrella Day, making it a globally acknowledged day to prevent sexual violence against boys and drive real change.
