Elections should reflect the people’s will, but in Nigeria, they often resemble auctions. Vote-buying, rigging, and ballot snatching have become recurring headlines. The 2007 election was labeled by international observers as the “worst in Nigeria’s history.” Even in 2023, reports of voter suppression and compromised technology raised serious doubts about electoral credibility.
Development: Still a Mirage
Democracy was meant to deliver prosperity, yet Nigeria remains in crisis. Despite earning over $1 trillion in oil revenues, the country has one of the world’s highest poverty rates. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (2022), 133 million Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty. Where did the wealth go? Corruption offers the grim answer.
Rule of Law or Rule of Power?
In true democracies, no one is above the law, but in Nigeria, the political elite often escape justice. Scandals like the Halliburton bribes and Diezani Alison-Madueke’s alleged $153 million loot show that accountability is selective. Meanwhile, ordinary citizens face severe penalties for minor offenses.
The Harsh Reality: Electoral Authoritarianism
Experts argue Nigeria practices electoral authoritarianism, a system where elections exist but power stays in the hands of a few. As Jimmy Carter once said, “A government without accountability is tyranny in disguise.” Sadly, that feels true in Nigeria today.
Bottom Line
Democracy in Nigeria exists in name, but its essence, fairness, justice, accountability, is missing. Until systemic corruption is dismantled and votes truly count, what we have is not democracy, but an illusion.
